Mauritius is an island to the east of Madagascar and above the Tropic of Capricorn in the Indian Ocean. It has two seasons: warm and rainy from December to April, and pleasantly cool and dry from May to November. Daily high temperatures range from 22ðC (72ðF) in winter to 31ðC (88ðF) in summer. Water temperatures vary between 22ðC (72ðF) and 27ðC (81ðF).

The currency is the Mauritian rupee, divided into 100. English is the official language but most people in Mauritius are equally fluent in English and French. Creole and French predominate everyday life and several oriental languages are also spoken. The various population movements of the last 300 years have given Mauritius a unique blend of different races, cultures and religions. People of European, African, Indian and Chinese origin have created a society where the various cultures and traditions flourish in peace and harmony. Reflecting this, the cuisine of Mauritius is a fascinating combination of Indian, Creole, Chinese and European influences.

Today the well-kept colonial villas of French, Dutch and British colonial plantation owners can still be found all over the island. The main crop is now sugar cane, which is grown on about 90% of the cultivated land area and accounts for 25% of exports. In the west is the capital and largest city, Port Louis, an important seaport and commercial centre. On the original waterfront, former warehouses recall Mauritius' colonial heritage. In the town centre are pavement cafés, restaurants, designer shops, cinemas, clubs and even a casino. The remarkable Hippodrome at Champ de Mars is the oldest racecourse in the southern hemisphere.

Other important towns are Curepipe, Vacoas, Phoenix, Quatre Bornes, Rose-Hill, Beau-Bassin and Quartier Militaire.
