He has also won the European Order of Merit in 1981 and 1984. In 1990, he helped Germany to win the World Cup for the first time and as such elevated his status there to national hero. Langer was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002 and appointed captain of the triumphant European Team for the 2004 Ryder cup at Oakland Hills, a fitting finale and just reward for a player whose contribution to the game is simply immeasurable.

Of his involvement with Le Touessrok Golf Course, Langer has said: "What I aspired to create is a golfing experience that truly arouses all the senses. From the amazing natural setting to the challenges presented by the course, I want it to be a game to remember for all who play.

I take putting my name on a golf course very seriously. Here it was an easy choice because the location combines environmental sensitivity, unmatched natural beauty, world-class ownership and magnificent golfing weather. The spectacular setting never stops impressing me. I knew that the minute I set foot on the island."
